Project Overview: Non-Contact Dimensional Measurement
Non-Contact Dimensional Measurement of Steel in Continuous Casting
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to provide accurate, non-contact measurement of steel product dimensions during the continuous casting process.
Accurate measurement of the dimensions and position of steel products is essential in the steel industry, particularly during continuous casting. Newly cast steel is handled at extremely high temperatures, making direct contact with conventional measuring instruments impractical and potentially unsafe.
Laser sensors provide an advanced, non-contact solution for dimensional measurement on steel production lines. They can measure hot steel products without direct physical contact, making them well suited to demanding high-temperature manufacturing environments.
Applications of Laser Sensors in the Steel Industry
Laser sensors are precise, non-contact instruments used to determine the position and dimensions of materials that cannot be measured through direct contact because of their high temperature.
In hot rolling mills and other high-temperature steel production environments, laser sensors deliver accurate measurements by projecting laser light onto the steel surface and analyzing the reflected signal. This process enables continuous monitoring of product dimensions throughout production.
Project Scope
Continuous casting operations may include multiple production lines and various machines. This project therefore requires a complete dimensional detection and measurement package to be installed on each continuous casting machine.
Each package includes the equipment required to project the laser beam, detect and analyze the reflected signal, and support reliable operation under extreme industrial temperatures.
Components of Each Dimensional Measurement Package
- Laser Equipment
Laser equipment projects a precisely controlled laser beam onto the steel surface and detects the reflected signal required for dimensional measurement.
- Cooling System
The cooling system maintains suitable operating temperatures for the measurement equipment in high-temperature production environments.
- Protective and Reinforcement Systems
Protective components help ensure the durability, stability, and measurement accuracy of the equipment under harsh industrial conditions.
- Data Processing Software
The software analyzes the acquired data and generates detailed information and reports on the dimensions and position of the steel product.
Improving Accuracy and Quality Control in Steel Production
By applying advanced laser technology, the non-contact steel dimensional measurement system can improve quality control and measurement accuracy throughout steel production.
In addition to supporting higher final-product quality, this approach can significantly reduce the costs and risks associated with contact-based measurements at high temperatures.
Advanced laser measurement systems also support the automation and optimization of steel production processes, enabling manufacturers to achieve higher levels of dimensional accuracy, process control, and product quality.
